- While in college, Arun Jaitley was a student activist and a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
- In 1974, he was elected as the president of the Delhi University students’ union
- Jaitley was appointed as the president of Delhi ABVP and the All India Secretary of the ABVP in 1977 and later as the president of BJP’s youth wing
- In 1989, he became the Additional Solicitor General for the Government of India
- Jaitley became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s national executive in 1991
- In 1999, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (Independent Charge) in Atal Vihari Bajpayee’s Cabinet
- Later in 1999, he was given charge as the Minister of State for Disinvestment (Independent Charge)
- Jaitley was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 2000
- In July 2000, he was appointed as the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs (Independent Charge)
- Later in 2000, as a Cabinet minister, he was put in charge of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs and the Ministry of Shipping
- He was appointed as the general secretary and spokesperson of the BJP in 2002
- He was re-elected to the Upper House of Parliament for a second term in 2006
- Jaitley became the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in 2009
- His third term in the Rajya Sabha began in 2012
- He became a part of Narendra Modi’s Cabinet in 2014 as was given charge as the Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs, and Information and Broadcasting
