    Schools closed in Mumbai?

As of today, Monday, May 26, 2025, schools in Mumbai are open and operating normally. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Despite these conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not declared any school closures. All educational institutions are expected to remain open unless the situation worsens or new advisories are issued.

However, the heavy rainfall has led to significant disruptions in the city. Nariman Point recorded 104 mm of rain between 9 and 10 AM, and other parts of South Mumbai also experienced heavy downpours. This has resulted in waterlogging, traffic congestion, and delays in local train services, particularly on the Central and Harbour lines. Several bus routes have been diverted, and residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to monitor local news and official announcements for any updates regarding school operations.

Mumbai has recorded the heaviest rainfall for the month of May in 107 years, with Colaba receiving an impressive 135 mm of rain within just 24 hours.. The southwest monsoon has arrived nearly ten days earlier than usual, marking the earliest onset since 1990. Residents are currently experiencing severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds up to 60 km/h.

Key areas in Mumbai, including Andheri, Dadar, Bandra, and Byculla, have reported severe waterlogging, resulting in significant traffic delays and disruptions to local train services. The Harbour line suburban train services were particularly affected due to water accumulation on the tracks at Masjid station. Additionally, flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport have faced delays, and the Acharya Atre Chowk station on Mumbai Metro Line-3 was temporarily closed due to flooding.
