    Centre plans speeding up MMDR amendments to boost critical mineral availability

    India is accelerating efforts to enhance the domestic availability of critical minerals, prompted by concerns over concentrated global supply chains and geopolitical tensions. Amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act are being expedited.

    Govt stresses on potential of exploration licence regime in unlocking critical mineral reserves

    The government is emphasizing the transformative potential of exploration licenses to unlock India's critical mineral reserves, encouraging private sector involvement in early-stage exploration. The Ministry of Mines held a workshop and roadshow, highlighting the shift from passive ownership to active exploration for minerals like lithium and REEs. The auction of 13 exploration license blocks for critical minerals is underway.

    Telangana auctions limestone mines in a first for the state

    Telangana has joined 12 other states in the mineral auction regime by bidding out two limestone blocks, eight years after the MMDR Amendment Act. Deccan Cements and NCL Industries have acquired these blocks. The state is also being urged to auction iron-ore and manganese blocks. Tamil Nadu and Arunachal Pradesh are also part of this mineral auction initiative.

    Centre may amend MMDR Act to prevent further levies

    Some companies could face dues running into thousands of crores if Thursday's Supreme Court order is applied retrospectively. This is because there are pending demands such as cess on royalty already raised by some state governments on mining operations.

    Mineral exploration projects almost doubled in last four years

    “The National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) has funded 270 mineral exploration projects in the country out of which 162 projects have been completed,” Joshi said while adding that 88 of these have been successful. With 21, the highest number of successful NMET funded projects are in Odisha. Deposits of Iron, Copper, Manganese, Limestone, Bauxite, and Graphite were found in the state.

    MMDR Amendment Act 2023 gets President's nod

    President Droupadi Murmu has approved the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Amendment Act, 2023, which empowers the central government to auction mines and promote production of 26 crucial minerals in India rapidly.
