Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter has set the internet abuzz with her new single “Manchild,” released on June 5, 2025. The track, which leads to her upcoming seventh studio album, immediately sparked fan theories that it was a playful roast of ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan. However, a closer look at the lyrics—and a telling mention of “mom”—hints the inspiration lies elsewhere.

The song begins with Sabrina’s signature wit, laughing and declaring, “oh, boy,” before launching into a catchy chorus:
“Manchild, why you always come a-runnin’ to me?
F–k my life, won’t you let an insane woman be?
    Never heard of self-care
Half your brain just ain’t there
Manchild, why you always come a-runnin’, takin’ all my lovin’ from me?”

While fans quickly linked the lyrics to her relationship with Keoghan, Sabrina’s second verse—where she sings, “Why so sexy if so dumb? / And how survive the Earth so long / If I’m not there, it won’t get dumb / I choose to blame your mom”—suggests otherwise. Barry’s mother tragically died from a heroin addiction when he was just 12 years old, a fact he has openly discussed in multiple interviews. He has shared how her struggles, and her death, shaped his childhood and led him and his brother into foster care. Given the sensitivity of this topic, it seems unlikely Sabrina would reference “blame your mom” if the song were about Keoghan.

Sabrina herself clarified she wrote “Manchild” “on a random Tuesday with Amy and Jack, not too long after finishing Short n’ Sweet,” and was still dating Barry at the time, further debunking the breakup theory.

The new single is the lead track for her upcoming album, which promises to be her biggest project yet, blending pop, dance, and signature Carpenter sass. While the album’s title and release date remain under wraps, Sabrina has teased more surprises and collaborations, keeping her fans eagerly tuned in. With “Manchild,” Sabrina proves her playful songwriting is as sharp as ever—and keeps everyone guessing about the true muse behind the music.
