A 29-year-old man went missing and was presumed drowned after he disappeared while swimming with his fiancée across a lake in Cypress Provincial Park Sunday evening (June 15, 2025), police in West Vancouver said. According to CTV News, first responders were called to Cypress Provincial Park at around 6:30 PM (local time) after witnesses reportedly saw the Burnaby man struggling to swim in Cabin Lake.

“There were several independent witnesses who saw the young man in distress and observed his companion attempting to assist him,” Sgt. Chris Bigland of the West Vancouver Police Department said in a statement Monday (June 16, 2025). “Unfortunately, he slipped beneath the surface of the water and has not been seen since.”

Firefighters and North Shore Rescue volunteers carried out an initial search of the lake but had to suspend the search as night fell. According to the police statement, search teams were expected to return to the area on Monday, along with an RCMP dive team, to track and recover the man’s body. “This is a complex mission given the location of the scene and the equipment required,” Bigland said. “We are asking the public to stay away from the area of Cabin Lake in Cypress Mountain Park.”

The police stated that the victim’s family was notified, and the investigation will be handed over to the B.C. Coroner’s Service once the body has been recovered from the lake. “The West Vancouver Police Department offers our deepest condolences to the family and thanks the members of the public who assisted on scene,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, in another incident that took place in Squamish over the weekend, a man went missing after a vehicle with four occupants went off the road, crashed, and went into the Squamish River early Saturday morning (June 14, 2025), according to the Vancouver Sun.

Search crews were on their toes in the region to find the missing man while three of the occupants were able to get to safety. It is, however, unclear how or why the vehicle went off the road and into the river. While three of the passengers made their way to shore, a fourth occupant has not been located. The search effort continued into Sunday with the use of helicopters and boats, but the individual has not been found. The operation continued on Monday.
